Aaron Donald put pen to paper on a hefty $95 million contract agreement with the Los Angeles Rams earlier this week. Donald’s new deal came as there was a possibility that he would opt to retire instead, which Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury had hoped to see come to fruition.

Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Kingsbury revealed that he was among the numerous high-profile guests at Rams head coach Sean McVay’s wedding this past weekend. Kingsbury took some time there to touch base with Donald, where he jokingly attempted to push him to call it a career.

“I did my best to try and convince Aaron Donald to retire, obviously that didn’t work,” Kingsbury said. “I told him, he's accomplished all he can accomplish and it's a great idea to go out on your own terms, all that.”

Kingsbury also noted that at the wedding, he sarcastically advised Rams wideout Cooper Kupp to “stop taking that McVay discount” and “hold out.” As with Donald, Kingsbury's convincing attempt on Kupp did not succeed, as the versatile receiver signed off on an $80 million extension deal with the Rams on Wednesday.

On Donald’s part, he essentially does not have much left to prove in the NFL. The Rams’ Super Bowl 56 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals further bolstered his resume for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The veteran defensive tackle has also recorded 98 career sacks, 15 of which have come against the Cardinals.

The resounding theme within the Rams organization as of late has centered on “running it back” next season. Their Super Bowl title defense will kick off later this year with a clash against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 of the 2022 campaign.
