The Arizona Cardinals have now secured a vital piece of their future for the years to come. The team has selected former Clemson Tiger linebacker Isaiah Simmons with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The two sides have recently agreed to come to terms for the team to secure the services of the 21-year old player.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport disclosed the details of the contract on Twitter:

Simmons was a highly-touted prospect coming out of his three-year collegiate career with the Tigers. He was noted for his positional versatility to take on different positions in the field. He took snaps at linebacker, played defensive end, cornerback, and safety, which allow the Cardinals to play him at multiple positions if needed.

The 6'4″, 238-pound player bagged the Butkus Award, ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and was included in the first-team All-ACC in 2019. He was also hailed as a unanimous All-American in the same year.

Simmons recorded a total of 89 assisted tackles, 159 total tackles, and 9.5 sacks in a span of 44 games. His team, however, failed to claim the College Football Playoff National Championship against top pick Joe Burrow's LSU Tigers last season.

The do-it-all defensive player will be a welcome addition to the Cardinals which finished dead-last in the NFC West with a 5-10 record. With a reloaded offense, the team will look to usher a new era in the desert.

Simmons and the rest of his team will see action for the first time in the 2020 season against NFC West favorites San Francisco 49ers on September 13 at the Levi's Stadium.
