Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson’s role with the team has bee the same over the first seven years of his career. He’s been one of the premier shutdown corners in the league, shadowing opposing No. 1 wide receivers and taking them out of the game.

But according to Kyle Odegard of the team’s official website, Peterson is set to take on a new role in head coach Steve Wilks’ new defense. Aside from the patented press coverage work against top receivers, he’ll also get to play off the ball and will even blitz at times.

Despite this significant alteration in his role from what he’s been accustomed to for so long, the Cardinals’ star corner seems to be excited about the different things he’ll now be able to do.

“It should be fun,” Peterson said. “I’m looking to make a ton of plays this year. I’m looking to start jumping routes now. I’m looking to be a little bit more aggressive off the ball, and be the same as I am when I’m in the receiver’s face.”

As Peterson notes, this change in the Cardinals’ defensive system should shake things up and make them a bit more difficult to gameplan against compared to the predictable way they used to play. Peterson's new role should also allow him to showcase more of what he's able to do.

If Peterson ends up thriving in this system like he did in his previous role as a true shutdown corner, the Cardinals’ already strong defense could potentially get even better.
