The Arizona Cardinals wasted no time in trying out their new acquisition of running back Kenyan Drake during the loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 9. It seems his stellar performance has effectively shut the door on running back Alfred Morris' time with the team.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals have released Morris:

RB Alfred Morris has just been informed of his release, source said. He was signed, then the team traded for RB Kenyan Drake, crowding the RB room.

The move to part ways with Morris should hardly come as any surprise. Arizona made a bit of a splash prior to the Oct. 29 trade deadline by pulling the trigger on a deal that sent a conditional sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Drake in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

It is safe to say that Drake has already managed to provide the Cardinals with plenty of bang for their buck by registering 162 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in his debut with the team. With running backs David Johnson and Chase Edmonds working their way back from injury, it appears there was simply no role for Morris in the backfield.

The veteran had signed with Arizona heading into Week 8. Unfortunately, it seems he struggled to make a strong impression on the coaching staff since they decided to go out and trade for Drake. Morris is now hoping there are still teams in search of more depth in the backfield that they could not acquire before the trade deadline.
