The Boston Celtics could get back their spark plug off the bench, as Marcus Smart has been cleared to play against the Detroit Pistons on Friday following a self-inflicted injury, according to A. Sherrod Blakely of NBC Sports Boston. He was a full-participant in practice on Wednesday.

Smart originally lacerated his shooting wrist by punching a picture frame at a hotel he was staying at, causing the team to rule him out for two weeks with the injury.

The Celtics had the chance to dangle Smart on the trade market prior to the deadline, and although they received plenty of offers from him, the front office valued him too much to let him go.

Smart's comeback would push Terry Rozier into a more limited role, but would allow Boston to get its defensive edge back into gear, having lost three games in a row and a grip on the top of the Eastern Conference.

Now trailing the Toronto Raptors by two games and closer to the revamped Cleveland Cavaliers than they expected to be prior to the trade deadline, the Celtics will need Smart's contributions at both ends of the floor if they hope to survive a fast-paced end of the season through the next 23 games.

Smart now has to make up for lost time and help spearhead this second unit the same way he had during the first half of the season. He is third on the team in assists with 4.7 per game, as well as 10.1 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
