After losing to the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Boston Celtics are staring at one of the most tumultuous offseason for any NBA team this year. With Anthony Davis trade talks swirling and Kyrie Irving also facing free agency, the team is in for some drama. Thankfully for Irving, it seems as if his teammates have his back despite the many negative comments that have begun popping up.

Speaking to media the day after the Celtics defeat, Marcus Smart was asked about the notion that Kyrie Irving’s may be a poor leader. His answer was very succinct, and very definitive. “Bulls—. That’s bulls—.”

Of course, it isn’t shocking to see Smart take that approach and defend his teammate. While Irving certainly did play bad, he was hardly the only Celtics player not performing up to their perceived skill level, and losing to the team with the best record in the NBA is hardly a blight on the team as a whole.

Still, the way the Celtics lost will be scrutinized for much of the offseason, especially if Irving should leave during free agency. In the four losses against the Bucks, Irving shot 25-of-83 (30%) from the field, and just 5-of-27 (19%) from 3 point range. During yesterday’s defeat, it looked as if Irving was simply checked out of the game, shooting random shots with no rhythm at all.

While much has been made about Irving and his ability to lead, it isn’t wrong to say that he has been extremely vocal about his team, especially when it comes to the younger teammates on the Celtics. Players like Smart are old enough to not allow it to affect them, but only time will tell if the younger players on the team were perhaps not happy about the messages Irving was sending. As the NBA offseason prepares to get underway, it’ll be a huge summer for both the NBA world and the Celtics in particular.
