On Friday, the Los Angeles Chargers reached an agreement on a new deal with running back Austin Ekeler. To be specific, they agreed upon a four-year contract worth $24.5 million.

According to Tom Pelissero on Twitter, Ekeler has spoken out on that new deal.

Ekeler went undrafted and signed with the Chargers back in 2017. So this is monumental for Ekeler. This is likely something he couldn't imagine in his wildest dreams.

Now it's a reality though, and it's a very good deal for both sides. Ekeler gets a solid pay day and stability, and he will be the feature back in the offense.

Meanwhile, the Chargers did not have to spend too much money on him. And they get an elite pass catching running back who can make things happen in the ground game as well.

Los Angeles struggled mightily last season. Coming into the year, they were Super Bowl contenders, but they failed to even make the playoffs.

Now it looks like they are attempting to start over. That was shown when they decided to let quarterback Philip Rivers become a free agent, and announce they wouldn't pursue him. It appears they won't be going after running back Melvin Gordon either.

Ekeler gives them great production at a reduced cost, and they can spend that money to find a replacement at quarterback. Or they could find a QB via the draft, and spend that money to help the team in other areas.

Either way, this deal signifies a new chapter for Los Angeles. They aren't rebuilding, they still expect to compete. However, some new names might be in the mix.

Ekeler will remain though. The running back has earned this contract, and will likely prove that in the coming years.
