Through the first five weeks of the season, Los Angeles Chargers rookie safety Derwin James has quickly made his presence felt in the secondary behind his all-around play at the position.

This has caught the eye of opposing teams with the latest being Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield ahead of their matchup on Sunday afternoon as he poured forth much praise toward James for being an all-around talent on the field, according to Eric D. Williams of ESPN.

“I wouldn't do him justice to point to one particular thing,” Mayfield said. “I think he's a do-it-all safety. That's what the buzz was for him before the draft, and he's just making all of that come true now.

“He's doing everything on the field. He can blitz, he can get back there in coverage. It's impressive to see a rookie be able to do that for a defense.

James has shown to be the complete package safety that has shown he can perform effectively whatever is asked of him ranging from playing in coverage to even providing some significant pressure on the opposing quarterback in the pass rush in blitz situations. This has seen him rack up 31 total tackles along with 3.0 sacks, an interception, and seven pass deflections through the first five games played this season. He is also currently the only defensive back in the league with at least 30 tackles and 3.0 sacks.

The 22-year-old has demonstrated to have the unique ability to be a versatile defensive back that has quickly become an anchor in the Chargers' secondary along while putting himself in the early conversation for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. If he can maintain this level of play throughout the year, it could see him become the frontrunner to earn the prestigious honor.

James will play a crucial role in Week 6 on the road against the Browns as he will have the task of limiting Mayfield's impact on the game. Beyond that, it's just another chance to further showcase the promising ability he has on the field.
