The Los Angeles Chargers are locking down one of Justin Herbert’s key weapons for the foreseeable future. According to Ian Rapoport, the Chargers and wide receiver Mike Williams have agreed to a new contract extension that will pay the wide receiver $60 million over the next three years.

Rapoport also reports that $40 million will be guaranteed money, marking a huge payday for Williams. The 27-year-old was set to hit free agency for the first time in his career this offseason, but clearly, the Chargers were determined to keep him from hitting the open market.

After a very successful 2021 season out of the former No. 7 overall pick, Williams is getting paid like one of the top receivers in the league, earning $20 million annually through the 2024 season.

Last year, Williams and Herbert showcased their strong rapport. The wideout hauled in a career-high 76 receptions and racked up 1,146 yards, just the second time he’s surpassed the 1,000-yard mark. He scored nine touchdowns last season, bringing his career tally up to 26 across his first 72 games.

Had a deal not been reached between the two sides, it was expected the Chargers would place Williams under the franchise tag, giving them more time to negotiate a new contract. That won’t be necessary, however, as the five-year veteran has agreed to stick around for a few more seasons, earning a handsome paycheck in the process.

With Williams now locked down for the next few seasons, the core of Herbert, Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, and Williams can continue to light up opposing defenses for the foreseeable future.
