The Los Angeles Chargers fell short of reaching the playoffs for the fourth straight season, forcing them to immediately shift their focus toward this upcoming offseason in hopes of bucking that trend.

One huge decision they need to make is what to do with former All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates, who is set to become a free agent. According to Jack Wang of the LA Daily News, general manager Tom Telesco voiced that there is no clarity at this point regarding Gates' future with the organization.

Gates just completed his 15th season in the league, posting career lows of 30 catches, 317 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. Over the last few seasons, the 37-year-old has stepped back into a secondary role in the passing game, allowing fellow tight end Hunter Henry to blossom. Pro Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen has firmly establishing himself as the team's primary receiving option as well, even in the red zone where Gates flourished for years.

The Chargers want to bring back the eight-time Pro Bowler on a new deal, but that will be determined after Telesco and Gates sit down and discuss his NFL future. If he decides to step away, he certainly owns a compelling case for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Gates is just the second tight end and ninth player overall to record 100 career touchdown receptions. He is currently 13th in overall touchdowns and sixth in touchdown receptions, leading all active players.

If Gates does decide to continue playing, there's a strong chance 2018 will be the final season of his illustrious NFL career.
