Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu's free agent market has heated up in recent days. Mathieu, a native of Louisiana, visited with the New Orleans Saints about a possible return home, then had a virtual visit with the Philadelphia Eagles. It's becoming increasingly clear that the free agent safety won't be returning to Kansas City. Mathieu, who was emotional speaking about his time with the franchise, dropped a revelation about a possible Chiefs' exit, via Pro Football Talk.

“To be honest, if they would’ve offered me Justin Reid’s deal, obviously I would’ve tried to negotiate, but if that’s where they drew their line in the sand, I probably would’ve took it,” Mathieu said. “I probably would’ve took it. Agents are going to do their thing, but at the end of the day, it’s the player’s decision whether to sign it or not.”

Mathieu, who described himself as ‘heartbroken' about his time with the Chiefs possibly ending, spoke about how he would have been willing to take a deal similar to the one signed by former Houston Texans teammate Justin Reid, who inked a three-year, $31.5 million free agent contract with Kansas City.

Now, Mathieu saying he “probably would have took it” doesn't mean that he definitely would have signed the contract when it was placed in front of him.

However, the fact that the free agent safety might have been willing to take somewhat of a pay cut to remain with the Chiefs definitely hurts the franchise, as he became not only a key part of the back end of their defense, but an emotional leader as well.
