Eric Bieniemy of the Kansas City Chiefs is aware of the following: This week, the NFL created some controversy with a proposed expansion of the Rooney Rule that would give NFL teams that hired minorities better draft picks. While the league decided not to go that far, the NFL did decide to expand on the rule in some aspects.

Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, teams (the Chiefs and everyone else) no longer can block assistants from interviewing for coordinator jobs or front office personnel from interviewing for assistant General Manager jobs. The NFL also now will require at least two external minority candidates for head coaching jobs, at least one minority candidate for any of the three coordinator positions and at least one external minority candidate for the senior football operations or general manager jobs.

Current Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy interviewed for three different head coaching jobs this offseason and although he was not hired, the 50-year-old coach and former player is happy with the new rules implemented by the league.

I think there are plenty of candidates that are more than qualified. I think one thing that popped up is that some of the coaches, assistant coaches, are going to have an opportunity to interview. I think that's huge. I think that's huge across the board regardless of skin color,” Bieniemy said on a recent conference call with Chiefs beat reporters.

Last year, the Chiefs once again had one of the best offenses in all of football.

Led by 2018 MVP Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs ranked second in the league in scoring offense with 29.9 points per game. Bieniemy's offense helped Kansas City win their first title since 1970.

” … I think one thing is that with all this discussion being brought to the table, it just opened up different doors for many different people,” Bieniemy added.
