The Kansas City Chiefs showed interest in signing veteran running back Adrian Peterson prior to the former league MVP inking a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions.

Peterson has ties to Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, and ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the history between the two nearly prompted Kansas City to make an offer:

Chiefs showed some level of interest in Adrian Peterson this week – OC Eric Bieniemy was his long-time running backs coach in Minnesota — but the Thursday night game was too tough a turnaround to seriously consider.

Peterson was cut by the Washington Football Team on Friday morning in a rather surprising move.

The Lions pounced on the opportunity to add him to their backfield given injuries to rookie D'Andre Swift and second-year back Bo Scarbrough. It is also a depth play in the event Kerryon Johnson–who has dealt with a number of injury issues over his first two seasons–is forced onto the shelf yet again.

Adding Peterson might have made sense for the Chiefs if they had more time before the season opener on Thursday night.

Aside from past history between “All Day” and Bieniemy, the Chiefs lack backfield depth behind rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Not to mention, veteran running back LeSean McCoy had plenty of success with the Chiefs last season, and Peterson's hard-nosed running style might have been a nice change of pace from the more elusive Edwards-Helaire.

Instead, AP will return to the NFC North, and the Chiefs will hope Edwards-Helaire can stay healthy and produce at a high level.
