The Kansas City Chiefs locked up Patrick Mahomes with a massive 10-year, $503 million contract extension earlier this month, ensuring that they will have the best player in football through his prime years.

There never seemed to be any doubt that Mahomes would stay with the Chiefs. Since being drafted 10th overall by the club in 2017, Mahomes has won an MVP award and led Kansas City to a Super Bowl championship, so he has already made a colossal impact on the franchise.

Plus, Mahomes clearly enjoys playing for the Chiefs.

Regardless, it's obviously nice to know for sure he will be around for the long haul.

As for what Mahomes needed in order to sign an extension?

“There were two things I said when we went into negotiations: I wanted to keep great players around me and I wanted to have long-term security for my family,” said Mahomes, according to Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports. “I certainly wasn't thinking 10 years. I didn't even know NFL contracts did that.”

Well, for players like Mahomes, they do.

“With those two things in mind, the way we structured the deal and the way we did it, we're going to have a lot of flexibility to keep great players around me and when you have great players around you, you're going to have a great football team,” added Mahomes.

The Chiefs were also able to extend defensive lineman Chris Jones, so the flexibility that Mahomes is talking about has already been on full display.

Mahomes is coming off of a 2019 campaign in which he played 14 games and threw for 4,031 yards, 26 touchdowns, and five interceptions while completing 65.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 105.3.
