Patrick Mahomes' generational arm talent makes it easy to believe most of his success last season is owed to raw ability.

Indeed, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback made many throws the NFL had never seen before, some of which many deemed impossible on a professional football field. Mahomes proved to be capable of throwing off of basically any platform, with his arm in any position; he completed a pass with his left hand while scrambling to the sideline during a crucial third down against the Denver Broncos; and on multiple occasions threw legitimate no-look passes, occasionally leaving his receivers as confused as the defense.

Don't expect the fawning over Mahomes' physical tools to lessen any time soon, either. He's still just 23, years away from his prime, and recently boasted that he could throw the football 100 yards in the thin air of Mexico City, where Chiefs face the division rival Los Angeles Chargers in November – a claim it's unclear whether or not should be taken seriously.

Still, first-year quarterback don't dominate to the level Mahomes did in 2018 without also possessing high-level football IQ. Ever since the former Texas Tech signal-caller was drafted in 2017, Kansas City has gone out of its way to praise his ability to scan the field and ongoing development making pre-snap reads.

Mahomes' aptitude in both areas shouldn't be surprising considering his dedication to studying film and the playbook. Apparently, he'd even rather continue getting better during the offseason than take proper safety precautions during a tornado.

Talk about commitment.

Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while competing 66 percent of his passes as a first-year starter last season, en route to MVP honors. Considering his commitment to improving, don't be surprised if he wins a lot more individual hardware throughout his career.
