The Kanas City Chiefs made a splash in free agency this offseason with the addition of safety Tyrann Mathieu. It appears he is already getting well acquainted with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Both players have been battling it out on each side of the ball during the team's offseason practices. According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Patrick Mahomes is enjoying competing against Mathieu:

“He’s a monster,” Mahomes said of Mathieu. “A guy that’s able to do everything, really good at every single aspect of football and a great football player. It’s good to have some of the great guys out there on defense you get to compete against them and make yourself better.”

Mathieu echoed Mahomes' comments as they both try to help each other improve.

“Every single play is a challenge going against an MVP-caliber quarterback and the weapons he has,” Mathieu said of Mahomes. “Each and every day we’re trying our best to really compete against each other.”

It is encouraging to see that Mathieu is already making an impact in Kansas City after signing a three-year $42 million deal with the team this offseason. Patrick Mahomes has established himself as one of the most promising, young quarterbacks in the league. Regardless, it will be difficult for him to top his MVP campaign in 2018. Fortunately, going against talented opponents every day in practice should help him find ways to improve.

Of course, the same can be said for Mathieu. While Mahomes leads the offense, he will be tasked with securing areas over the top in the secondary. Squaring off against the reigning MVP could help him get back to his Pro Bowl-caliber ways with the Chiefs.
