This time last year, Sammy Watkins endured heartbreak when his Kansas City Chiefs fell short of making the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. It was a bitter defeat against a team that has defied expectations time and time again.

This time, he's celebrating with his teammates. The Chiefs are Super Bowl-bound after defeating the Tennesee Titans, 35-24. Sammy Watkins looked back at the two years he's had with the team now that he's headed to the Super Bowl. He told ESPN's Adam Teicher that he's glad to get one thing right in his first foray into free agency.

It's important to look at where Watkins' career was going before ending up with the Rams. Sammy Watkins was picked fourth overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2014 Draft as one of the best wide receivers coming out of Clemson that year. He played terrific football during his three-year stint, notching 2459 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. But the team was nowhere near contention when he was contributing, and the team found more value in him as a trade asset. They gave him to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a second-round pick.

The Rams were also playing good football, eventually making Super Bowl LIII. It would have made a lot of sense for Watkins to stay. However, he made the right decision to explore free agency. He ended up with another exciting team in the Chiefs, and the rest was history.

During the AFC Championship game, Sammy Watkins stood out among the team's receivers, catching for 114 yards and a touchdown. He now has a chance to cementing the run with a Super Bowl title, and he wouldn't have experienced this if he decided to play it safe during the 2018 offseason.
