The Kansas City Chiefs are 7-1 and look like legitimate Super Bowl contenders this season. But their defense has struggled to slow down opposing offenses, particularly through the air. As a result, the Chiefs are considering upgrading at cornerback before the trade deadline, with the New York Giants’ Janoris Jenkins a potential target.

This isn’t the first time the Chiefs have sought to trade for a big-name defensive back. They were previously interested in trading for Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas before the All-Pro suffered his unfortunate season-ending broken leg.

The Chiefs are currently giving up 305 passing yards per game, which is 29th in the league. Their cornerback depth chart of Steven Nelson, Kendall Fuller, Orlando Scandrick, and Tremon Smith has simply been unable to get the job done thus far.

Jenkins would be quite the significant upgrade to that Chiefs cornerback group. The Giants corner has already had two interceptions through eight games this season.

After trading away both Eli Apple and Damian Harrison, the Giants seem willing to part with just about anyone on their defense for the right price. Jenkins appears to be the most likely player to be the next Giant to be dealt, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN.

Jenkins alone won’t solve the Chiefs defense’s deficiencies, which are their most glaring weakness. But at the very least, he should help lift that unit from the cellar and up to respectability. If that Chiefs defense can improve, their case as a top Super Bowl contender should strengthen dramatically.
