Clemson Tigers head football coach Dabo Swinney dropped a bomb to the media after practice Wednesday, announcing that wide receiver Justyn Ross has played his final down at Clemson.

Todd Shanesy of the Greenville News provided clarity from coach Swinney.

“He doesn’t need another season here,” Swinney said. “He’s going pro. He’ll be a great one. He’s more than ready. He would have been last year if he had not gotten hurt (and missed the season with a spine condition).

“It’s not going to take him long to get back. … I don’t know if he could play in a bowl game or not, but he’ll definitely be ready to train and do what he needs to do for the combine and be ready to roll.”

The Clemson wide receiver is set to have surgery Thursday on his fractured foot. Injuries have plagued the star wideout for a lot of his college career. Ross was diagnosed with congenital fusion in his neck last spring. He was not cleared to play until this year.

During the preseason this year, Ross suffered a hairline fracture in his foot. Yet, somehow he has played in all 10 games this season. He has recorded 46 catches for 514 yards and three touchdowns. It was already known that Ross was going to be a relatively high draft pick after his freshman season. During his first year at Clemson, Ross had 1,000 yards receiving and nine touchdowns.

That season culminated in the Clemson Tigers winning the NCAA Championship, defeating Alabama 44-16. Ross had a massive performance, catching six passes for 153 yards and a touchdown. Clemson became the first team to finish a season 15-0 and win the title since the 1897 Penn Quakers.

It was the worst loss coach Nick Saban has ever sustained at Alabama, losing by 28 points.
