Cleveland Browns Week 14 Predictions

4. Baker Mayfield throws for 3 touchdowns

The Browns quarterback is having a topsy-turvy 2021 NFL season. So far this season, Baker Mayfield has thrown for 11 touchdowns against six interceptions and has completed 62.2 percent of his passes. In Week 12’s loss to the Ravens, Mayfield was especially bad in the pocket, as he connected on just 18 of 37 passes for 247 yards. He had tossed for a touchdown and avoided getting intercepted, but his 48.7 pass completion rate largely explains why the Browns were not able to convert the four turnovers they forced Baltimore to commit into more points. It is also for the same reason why expecting Mayfield to throw for three touchdowns this weekend would be a stunning feat for the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Also, Mayfield has not passed for three touchdowns in a game, so far this season. But with the Browns coming off a bye and playing against the same team that they played against before their extra week of rest – and one that did not have a bye in Week 13 – Mayfield could be at his best when he sees the Ravens again. He should also feel bolder this time around throwing downfield with Baltimore missing the services of one of its top defenders in cornerback Marlon Humphrey, who is done for the rest of the year with an upper-body injury he sustained in the Ravens’ Week 13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

3. Jarvis Landry goes off again

As mentioned in the discussion above about Mayfield’s potential to explode in Week 14, the absence of Humphrey will definitely be negatively felt by the Ravens’ defense. Needless to say, it’s also going to be a big plus for Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who racked up 111 receiving yards on six receptions and 10 targets in the first meeting with Baltimore. Landry did all that with Humphrey on the field for the already banged-up Ravens secondary. Now, that same secondary is even more hurt. Humphrey is on the injured reserve, joining fellow Ravens cornerbacks Marcus Peters, Iman Marshall, and Khalil Dorsey.

Cleveland still has the titanic duo of Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb, which should put a cap on the Browns’ pass plays, but at the same time, that vulnerable Ravens’ pass defense could be too tasty for Mayfield and company form them not to take plenty of shots at, especially in the early goings of the contest. Landry has been battling with injuries for most of the season, but the bye in Week 13 must have his body well-rested for the rematch against the Ravens’ defense that is second-worst in the NFL with 272.4 passing yards allowed per game and 30th in opponents’ yards per pass (7.5).

2. Browns limit Baltimore to fewer than 16 points

Cleveland’s stop unit did its job in Week 12 against the Ravens. The Browns made Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson look human in that contest. Jackson still had his moments, but what’s being remembered from that game more was the fact that he threw four interceptions. Cleveland’s catatonic offense wasted the efforts of Myles Garrett and company, but it’s not like the Browns’ defense has any choice other than continuing to try to play its best this coming weekend.

Speaking of Garrett, he got one of the two Browns sacks in Week 12. Garrett (14.0 sacks) has fallen behind Pittsburgh Steelers star TJ Watt (16.0 sacks) for the most sacks in the NFL, so there’s also an extra individual motivation for the Browns defensive end to come up with a huge performance on Sunday. Apart from that, Cleveland could have better success on offense this time around, leaving the Browns with an increased time of possession and more ability to control the game’s pace.

1. Cleveland wins and covers the spread

The Browns are currently favored by 2.5 points in this matchup against Baltimore. There are a few things at least going for in their favor. Cleveland is playing at home, and it’s also coming off a bye, as mentioned earlier. Moreover, even in their recent wins, the Ravens did not look particularly impressive. Now appears to be a perfect time for Cleveland to score a massive victory against its AFC North rivals.
