The reigning Sixth Man of the Year, Los Angeles Clippers shooting guard Lou Williams, is up to his usual tricks again in the new NBA season and Clippers head coach Doc Rivers is happy the guard is on his side.
In the Clippers' 120-95 road win against the Orlando Magic Friday night, Williams scored 28 points in 21 minutes, showing why he's probably the best microwave scorer in the NBA. The 32-year-old scored 16 fourth-quarter points in less than seven minutes, prompting Doc Rivers to give high praise to Williams after the game.
“He is a professional scorer,” Rivers said, via Andrew Greif of the Los Angeles Times. “You see it every time he plays.”
Last season, Lou Williams scored 35 or more points as a reserve six times, tied for the most such games in a season since the NBA began recording starts in 1970-71. The rest of the league combined for five such games.
Through nine games this year, Lou Williams is averaging 19.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists while shooting 44.9 percent from the field, 43.6 percent from beyond the arc and 92.3 percent from the free-throw line. The Clippers are 5-4 on the season and Williams is a big reason why the team is off to a strong start.
Lou Williams has to be the favorite to win Sixth Man of the Year again. There really isn't another player in the league who scores at the rate which he does as a reserve.
