Activision unwittingly elevated the Call of Duty franchise as the poster series for massive installation sizes. The remake of Modern Warfare made news on release due to its almost unreasonable required storage space. Now, it doesn't seem as if Activision intends to remedy its massive games as it sent out a cautionary warning for PlayStation 4 owners. Players with the base 500GB version of PS4s will have to choose between both Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty Modern Warfare/Warzone.

The base 500GB version of the PlayStation 4 often runs into storage limitation problems given the size of current-generation games. However, Activision takes the cake with its massive install sizes. The latest Call of Duty blog post shared upcoming changes to the games, most importantly, its file size increase. The Call of Duty publisher explicitly told its PS4 player base to be mindful of the storage space that both full titles take up.

“Those who own a standard PlayStation 4 with a default hard drive of 500 GB may need to make room if they have the full versions of Modern Warfare/Warzone and Black Ops Cold War with all modes and packs installed.”

The blog post went out to instruct its PS4 players how to uninstall any unused content from the two massive titles. Simply press R3 at the Black Ops Cold War main menu to bring up the File Management window. Players will be able to delete selected parts of the games. For Warzone players, the Game Installs management window is under the General tab in the Options section.

“Should you have both games installed and have kept up to date with updates, you may need to delete some unused Game Content to have a successful download and install of the Warzone patch tonight.”

A publisher warning its players of file size reinforces the current state of transition in the gaming industry. We are definitely stepping into the next era with the introduction of the next-generation consoles. Additionally, it's become painfully clear that not all of our old beloved hardware can keep up with the latest games. It's time to make a tough decision and say goodbye to some old friends.
