Why Iowa State Could Cover the Spread

The Iowa State Cyclones are currently 6-4 and 4th in the Big 12 division. They are coming off a 41-38 loss at Texas Tech last week and will host the #13 ranked Sooners on Saturday. The Cyclones were held to just 89 rushing yards and had two turnovers in the loss. They allowed 41 points on 529 total yards to Texas Tech. Many of Iowa State's games have been high-scoring this season. As a unit, the Cyclones are averaging 34.3 points on 445.8 yards per game, ranking 20th in both categories. They are ranked 8th in FBS in yards per play with 6.6 and 6th in red-zone scoring percentage with a 94.74% scoring rate. Quarterback Brock Purdy is 4th in completion percentage (72.0%), throwing for 2,441 passing yards and 15 touchdowns. Breece Hall is one of the top rushers in the nation, leading with 1.172 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.

Defensively, the Cyclones give up 21.7 points per game to opponents. They allow the 8th fewest yards to opponents (310.7). Despite some high-scoring affairs that they have been a part of, the Cyclones have been a very respectable team that can play up to their competition. In their last six meetings against Oklahoma, Iowa State is 5-1 against the spread.

Why Oklahoma Could Cover the Spread

This season, the Oklahoma Sooners have played in some very close games, yet they have a 9-1 record and rank 1st in the Big 12. They suffered their first loss last week against Baylor, losing 27-14 while allowing 414 total yards of offense. The Sooners are 6-0 straight up at home this season. They have a very talented duo of quarterbacks that lead the offense. At the beginning of the season, Spencer Rattler was the starter, throwing for 1,474 passing yards and eleven touchdowns. He was benched midway through for Caleb Williams, who filled in perfectly for Rattler. Williams has thrown for 1,331 yards and 14 touchdowns. Both players lead the offensive production, ranking 5th in yards per play (6.7), 14th in points per game (36.0), and 2nd in completion percentage (72.24%). The Sooners lead the nation in red zone scoring percentage with a 97.56% rate.

Fortunately for the Sooners, the Cyclones are just 1-4 against the spread versus a team with a winning record. Oklahoma is allowing 27.2 points on 410 yards per game to opponents. Also, in their last seven games following an against the spread loss, the Sooners have a 5-2 record against the spread. The Cyclones defense has been shaky these previous three weeks giving up 29 points per game, so Oklahoma should expose it.

Final Iowa State-Oklahoma Prediction & Pick

The high total in this game makes it seem like it will be a shootout in Oklahoma. Given both teams' high success rates in the red zone, this game should have plenty of touchdowns. With that said, Oklahoma was exposed by Baylor last week and should be extra motivated to bounce back. The Sooners are averaging 45 points per game at home and will win by at least a touchdown. Lay the points with the Sooners.

Final Iowa State-Oklahoma Prediction & Pick: Oklahoma -3.5 (-106)
