The Indianapolis Colts went heavy on defense early on in the 2021 NFL Draft with their selections. After losing Anthony Castonzo to retirement in the offseason, many thought the Colts would address the tackle position early on in the draft. They opted to go with back to back defensive selections instead to start. And now after skipping on addressing the need via that route, they have addressed the need in free agency.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Colts agreed to a deal with free agent Eric Fisher.

Fisher had visited the Colts late last week and the two sides have now come to an agreement on Monday. It's a short term gig for the tackle who is coming off a brutal injury.

It was just back in January that Fisher suffered a torn achilles. For an offensive lineman over the age of 30, an injury like that could potentially lead to no teams being interested. Thankfully for Fisher, the Colts are comfortable enough with his rehab as Rapoport notes and because of that, are taking a flyer on the left tackle.

For Indianapolis, it's a low risk investment that could pay off handsomely if Fisher is able to provide to the Colts what he did to the Chiefs in Kansas City. The timeline likely remains foggy for Fisher's return, but it was just back in March that Kansas City believed he'd be ready by the start of the season.

The Colts didn't address the left tackle position early on in the draft like many had anticipated. Maybe that was by design, maybe that was based off how things played out in front of them. They hope now to have an answer to the gap that was left by 10-year veteran tackle Anthony Castonzo after his retirement. And the hope for the Colts is that Fisher is good to go for the start of the 2021 season.
