The Indianapolis Colts were reportedly working on a new contract extension for star offensive lineman Eric Fisher over the past few weeks, but nothing materialized ahead of the franchise tag deadline. The Pro Bowl left tackle is now expected to hit the open market, according to Adam Schefter, after the two sides failed to come to terms on a new deal.

This is a big surprise for the Colts, who were likely expecting to have Fisher in the mix for the 2022 season. While the future at quarterback is far from certain in Indianapolis, the Colts didn't expect to have to fill a vacancy at left tackle. Now, they'll need to find a suitable replacement for Fisher, whether it be via free agency or the NFL Draft.

Fisher had played just one season with the Colts, latching on with the team on a one-year deal last offseason. Prior to signing with Indy, the 31-year-old had spent eight seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, who drafted him first overall in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Central Michigan. During his Chiefs tenure, Fisher made two Pro Bowls and cemented himself as one of the league's top offensive linemen.

In 2021, Fisher made just under $8.5 million, but it remains to be seen what he'll collect on the open market now that he's destined for free agency. There will likely be a handful of teams interested in bringing aboard the experienced pass protector, and he could be a strong fit for any team in seeking an upgrade in the trenches.
