The Dallas Cowboys expected CeeDee Lamb to be picked early in the 2020 NFL Draft, so imagine their surprise when the highly touted wide receiver fell on their lap with the 17th overall pick.

According to Stephen Jones, the Cowboys' Executive Vice President, they were shocked to see him still available after 16 picks. For them, Lamb is the “best player” on their board.

In an appearance on ESPN, Jones revealed that the team was not too optimistic that they'll be able to get some of the best wide receivers of the 2020 class. However, as the draft progressed until their turn, they were surprised that the Sooners standout was still there.

“Sure enough you look up and a guy like CeeDee Lamb is sitting there. He's the best player on our board, not to take away anything from the guys who were sitting there. We just had to follow our instincts and go with the best player,” the Cowboys VP explained, noting that they got the luck of the draw.

CeeDee Lamb spent three years in Oklahoma where he established himself as a legitimate prospect. In 2018, together with fellow wideout Marquise Brown (who now plays for the Baltimore Ravens), Lamb helped the university record their first season to have two receivers catch for over 1,000 yards in 2018.

In 2019, Lamb was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award for the best college football receiver.

In a separate interview, Jones noted how Lamb's talents will help the Cowboys' offense in various ways.

“We certainly have opportunities to move the ball and score points. We'll just have to see. Obviously, we made that pick [of Lamb] because we think it makes us dynamic and certainly gives us the opportunity to really give people problems when they line up on the other side of the ball and when they defend us,” the 55-year-old exec added.

It's safe to say that the Cowboys are very pleased with their draft selection. Now, it's time to see if they can seize this great opportunity.
