The 2018 regular season is around the corner, which has led to teams around the leagues reducing their roster down to 53 players over the weekend.

This has seen the Dallas Cowboys decide to move on from defensive end Kony Ealy on Saturday afternoon, according to Mike Garafolo of The NFL Network.

Ealy had signed with the Cowboys over the offseason with the hope that he could provide depth and production to their edge pass rushing, but he had struggled to find a consistent role. The play of Randy Gregory likely made him expendable as he had been displaced from a steady spot on the defensive line. Gregory had shown some promise in the preseason with his play that he could finally become a factor on the edge for the Cowboys this upcoming season.

The 26-year-old was cut by the New England Patriots prior to training camp last year, which he was claimed off the New York Jets shortly after that as he registered just 1.0 sacks and 14 total tackles in 15 games played last year. Prior to that, he spent his first three years in the league with the Carolina Panthers and has 15.0 careers sacks, six forced fumbles, and 14 pass deflections.

Ealy will now hit the open market just a few days prior to the start of the regular season where he will have the chance to latch onto another team that could include being a member of the practice squad.

The Cowboys will likely continue to lean heavily on Pro Bowl defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence to lead the charge with his pass rushing ability. Lawrence put forth a breakout 2017 season after posting a career-best 14.5 sacks that helped him earn his first Pro Bowl selection and a Second-Team All-Pro nod. He also finished tied for second in the NFL in sacks, and his 79 total pressures were the third-most in the football land, according to Pro Football Focus.
