The Dallas Cowboys suffered the first upset defeat of this season’s NFL playoffs, as the San Francisco 49ers secured a dramatic 23-17 road win in the wild-card round.

This game for the Cowboys was filled with errors and miscues across the board. From the 14 total penalties to the multitude of questionable play calls on offense, it simply was a performance to forget for the reigning NFC East champions.

As expected, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is far from pleased with not only the early playoff elimination but also with the way the team performed against its longtime NFC rival.

“Extraordinarily disappointed,” Jones said after the game. “Very disappointed. Disappointed for our fans.

“This is quite a letdown.”

Jones further added that he could not “remember” the last time that he has been this disappointed following a Cowboys game.

The Cowboys entered the regular season with not only high expectations to win their division but also to pull off a deep playoff run. They finished the last decade with a mere two playoff wins and have not secured a trip to the NFC Championship game since the 1995 campaign. With this defeat, their woes in January will carry on for at least another year.

It will be noteworthy to see whether any major changes may come in the offseason for the Cowboys later this year. At the least, they could see plenty of turnaround on the defensive side of the ball, especially as the likes of defensive end Randy Gregory and safety Jayron Kearse are set to become unrestricted free agents.

The Cowboys’ upcoming offseason may end up being a notable, franchise-altering one.
