The Dallas Cowboys will miss Randy Gregory on the field if this latest suspension lingers into 2019. For now, though, the greatest concerns regarding the talented defensive end should be about his health and wellbeing following another substance-related misstep.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday that Gregory has been suspended indefinitely for violating the league's substance abuse policy and the terms of his conditional reinstatement to the NFL.

His attorney, Daniel Moskowitz, subsequently told USA TODAY Sports' Jori Epstein that while Gregory indeed hopes to get back on the field as soon as possible, this latest development “is about more than football.”

“The expectation for Randy is the exact same: to get him back on the field playing as soon as possible,” Moskowitz said. “Our personal confidence in him has not wavered. This is about more than football. We appreciate the public recognizing this is a private matter and thank the Jones (family) and Cowboys for their continued support.”

Gregory enjoyed the most productive campaign of his NFL career last season. Playing in 14 games, he had 25 tackles, six sacks, seven tackles for loss, and 15 quarterback hits, emerging as Dallas' most disruptive pass-rusher behind star defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence. He finished second on the Cowboys in sacks, tackles for loss, and quarterback hits in 2018.

The former second-round pick missed the duration of the 2017 season due to a year-long suspension resulting from a third positive drug test.

Gregory's first suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy came in February 2016, after a rookie season in which the former second-round pick had 11 tackles, two tackles for loss, and sick quarterback hits.
