The Dallas Cowboys are nearing a major decision in the coming months with quarterback Dak Prescott as he will be eligible for a lucrative long-term deal next offseason.

It will put the Cowboys in the spot of deciding to pay Prescott a huge contract that would make him their franchise quarterback for the long haul. This is something that former Cowboys great and Hall of Famer Troy Aikman has voiced that he believes the team shouldn't hesitate to give him a new long-term deal when the time comes, according to the Dallas Morning News.

“There are some players I think you worry a little bit about once you get the big pay day. But with Dak I know that he'll be even more committed to being great and helping this team win a championship. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to pay him, but I think the longer you can hold that off just to be certain of your evaluations, I don't see anything wrong with that either.”

Aikman's comments shed light that he has been a huge supporter of Prescott since has had the opportunity out of the gate to show that he can lead the team to success. There have been some notable bumps along the way, but that is something he believes the third-year quarterback will continue to work through and improve as he gets more experience under his belt.

The only question is how big of a number would the Cowboys be willing to commit to Prescott at this point. There have been notable areas of needed improvement in his game in order to take that next step in his development. He has shown to be poised in the pocket while showing some command over the offense. It has yet to translate to him being able to lead it with his arm, but the team will have to continue to add pieces to the puzzle such as trading for former Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper.

There is certainly much for the Cowboys to assess before heading into that decision wholeheartedly, but it's something that could have a great impact on the long-term future of the franchise.
