The Dallas Cowboys’ initial optimism about star guard Zack Martin’s knee injury has proven to be right on the spot.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, an MRI on Sunday has shown that Martin incurred no ligament damage after suffering a hyperextended knee and bone bruise.

And as David Moore of the Dallas Morning News points out, the fact that Martin avoided a more serious injury means there’s now a decent chance the offensive lineman will make it back in time for their season opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 9.

Martin suffered the knee injury in the second quarter of their preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals after he was inadvertently hit in the knee with a Bengals player’s helmet. He limped off the field and did not return to the game.

However, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and owner/GM Jerry Jones did not seem overly concerned about Martin’s injury after the game, which has turned out to be accurate.

Martin, who just signed a massive six-year extension this offseason which made him the highest-paid interior offensive lineman in the league, has been one of, if not the best player in his position since entering the league in 2014. He has been a Pro Bowler in each of his first seasons and has also been named to a First-Team All-Pro twice.

If Martin does play against the Panthers, he will preserve his impressive streak of playing every single game in his NFL career. The former first-rounder has played 64 games out of 64 over his first four seasons in the league.
