The Chicago Cubs have enjoyed a productive offseason thus far, signing the likes of Andrelton Simmons, Marcus Stroman, and Japanese phenom Seiya Suzuki. On Saturday, the team added another key piece to their rotation in 2021 World Series champion and veteran lefty, Drew Smyly.

Just a one-year deal for the 32-year-old worth $5.2 million, with the chance to earn another $2 million in bonuses, per ESPN.

Smyly made 29 appearances last season (23 starts), going 11-4 with a 4.48 ERA for the Braves. He also pitched twice in the Fall Classic against the Houston Astros. The Cubs could certainly use another reliable left-handed arm in the rotation, joining Wade Miley, Stroman, Kyle Hendricks, and Alec Mills as the go-to guys for David Ross.

Smyly has been around the big leagues for a hot minute, previously pitching for the Tigers, Rays, Rangers, and Phillies before landing in Atlanta. He owns 4.18 ERA in his career.

The Cubs' staff is certainly looking a lot stronger heading into 2022 as they look to turn things around after a disappointing 2021 campaign. Chicago finished with a 4.87 ERA, which was 27th  in the MLB. They also hit just .236 as a group, which ranked them 26th. But, on both sides of the ball, the Cubs have got better this offseason, and hopefully, it pays off.
