Joe Maddon has heard his named mentioned in rumors all offseason long about his future with the Chicago Cubs. Some believed midway through the season that he would be brought back, but those opinions have mostly changed. Now, it appears that he is on his way out of town.

According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, shared by Bleacher Report, the Cubs moving on from Maddon is a “forgone conclusion” this offseason.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported Maddon's exit has all but been decided, with the Cubs choosing to move on after five seasons. Maddon's contract expires after the 2019 campaign, so it's not technically a firing, but for all intents and purposes, it'll be a choice made by Theo Epstein and Cubs management.

It would certainly be a bittersweet end of an era in Chicago if the Cubs do indeed move on from Maddon. He helped bring them back to relevance and led them to their first World Series win in 108 years back in 2016.

Maddon is going to be a highly sought after managerial candidate this offseason if the Cubs do move on. Teams like the New York Mets have already been rumored to be interested in him.

While there is still a chance that Theo Epstein and company change their minds, it is unlikely. The team's embarrassing play down the stretch of the season will be a driving factor to moving on.

Assuming the Cubs do move on from Maddon, potential replacements have been rumored to be Mark Loretta and David Ross. Joe Girardi is also a name that has come up quite often in the rumor mill.
