Thursday night saw the unveiling of the NBA All-Star game’s reserves. The presence of names like Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard and Ben Simmons was no surprise at all. The exclusion of two names in particular, however, felt odd.

While they may not be playing at an All-Star level like earlier in their careers, something just felt off about not having Dwyane Wade and Dirk Nowitzki around for the All-Star weekend festivities. It would also have felt wrong if other deserving players missed out on an All-Star selection in favor of giving Dirk or Wade a legacy nod. Luckily, Adam Silver has stepped in and made things right:

It is likely that they won’t play a ton, especially considering both players are in reduced roles for their team already, but to have them there will be a great way to honor some extraordinary careers.

For Wade, this will be his 13th All-Star game in 16 seasons, having played being selected every season from 2005-2016. Prior to the start of the season, Wade announced this would be his last year before retiring, so this will make a perfect send-off for the three-time champion and 2006 Finals MVP.

Nowitzki has yet to make a decision on what the future holds in store for his NBA career. In his 21st season, it is very possible that he may decide to hang it up this summer. This will make his 14th All-Star game appearance, having played in every game from 2002-2015 except for 2013 All-Star.
