Jim Caldwell hasn't been with the NFL since the XFL was revived — however briefly — but now it looks like he'll be returning to the league that started it all for him.
The former professional football player and NFL head coach is expected to join the Miami Dolphins' coaching team, according to a new report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
It's unclear, however, what role Caldwell will assume under the Dolphins' incoming head coach Brian Flores' direction.
Caldwell, who is currently serving as a consultant to the XFL, comes to the Dolphins' table with a handsome resume to back him up.
In addition to his stellar college coaching career — where he made history by becoming the first African-American head coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) — Caldwell became the quarterbacks' coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001, under the tutelage of Tony Dungy. When Dungy went to the Colts a year later, Caldwell followed him. When Dungy retired in 2009, Jim Caldwell became the Colts' head coach, where he remained until 2011.
He then became the quarterbacks' coach for the Baltimore Ravens just two weeks after he was fired from the Colts. Caldwell subsequently became the head coach for the Detroit Lions in 2014.
As of late, he's been a consultant for the newly-revived XFL.
Based off of his history, then, it stands to reason that Jim Caldwell will be offered the position of quarterbacks' coach. However, it remains to be seen which direction Flores, ultimately, decides to go with Caldwell in his stable.
