Tua Tagovailoa had the long-awaited opportunity to work alongside Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel during the team’s voluntary veteran workouts this past week.

From individual workouts to throwing passes to veteran wide receiver Tyreek Hill, Tagovailoa got a glimpse of what will be to come on the offensive side of the ball in the 2022 season.

Tagovailoa will also once again work under a new offensive system. McDaniel is slated to offer his expertise for the offense, while former Los Angeles Chargers run game coordinator Frank Smith will be calling plays as the team’s new offensive coordinator.

With what Tagovailoa has watched so far from the offense, he sees plenty of promise in what the unit can achieve in the 2022 campaign. More so, as he touched on during a press conference over the Dolphins’ voluntary veteran workouts, he is seeing shades of what he played under at Alabama.

“Well, we’ve only had two days of really getting into the offense, so there’s not much installed within the run, the run action and play passes that we have,” Tagovailoa said. “It’s very similar to what I’ve run at Alabama, which in a sense makes it a little easier as far as verbiage and whatnot. But that’s still a challenge, learning the verbiage, learning where everyone is going, hearing Mike (McDaniel) or Frank (Smith) or whoever it is in the headset trying to give the call and then recalling it to the offense.

“That’s still something that I’ve got to continue to get better at.”

Tagovailoa is set to play under a new offensive coordinator for the sixth straight year dating back to his run at Alabama. One of his goals heading into the 2022 season simply centers on getting more familiar with the language and verbiage in Smith’s offense.

“Yeah, you really just get used to studying and you get comfortable studying,” Tagovailoa said. “That’s all it is. You get comfortable with the verbiage, get comfortable with where everyone needs to go.”

For now, Tagovailoa sure has an eye on the start of the Dolphins' OTAs, which will kick off on May 16.
