Lewis Hamilton finishes second in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, bested by rival and race winner Max Verstappen. The Red Bull put on a sterling drive to secure the victory amid an otherwise chaotic race. Although the end result was surprising on its own, the Mercedes' podium finish was actually astounding given that Lewis Hamilton fell behind several places after suffering an unexpected slide.

Check out the surprising scene here:

The seven time world champion was hot on Verstappen's heels in second place when his Mercedes lost control and abruptly skidded into the gravel. Luckily for Hamilton, he was able to avoid a serious crash and get back into the race, despite falling back as far as ninth place.

Speaking of Mercedes and crashes, his teammate Valtteri Bottas was not as fortunate. Bottas collided with a Williams driven by George Russell, which took out both drivers from the race. The two have held a less-than-warm relationship prior, for obvious reasons, but the ensuing scene post-crash did nothing to mend any fences.

With Bottas out for Mercedes, Hamilton was able to salvage the race for his team in stellar fashion. The British driver slowly snaked his way up the standings and slithered past McLaren's Lando Norris for second place right at the beginning of Lap 60. McLaren's Norris still finished the race strong with another third place podium for the youngster.

But despite Lewis Hamilton's best efforts, it was the Red Bull rising star Max Verstappen that was absolutely golden throughout the entire race. He sealed first place by a whopping 22-second gap between him and Lewis, showing utter domination to take advantage of his rival's misfortunes. The next race will be on May 2 in Portugal and Formula 1 fans cannot wait.
