The Atlanta Falcons are looking to make a huge turnaround after their disappointing 2021 season. One of their biggest priorities has been getting some more help around their star quarterback Matt Ryan. However, Ryan’s massive contract has been a bit of a problem for them with regarding to getting help.

Now, the Falcons have done what most analysts expected them to do with Matt Ryan’s contract prior to the free agency period. Ian Rapoport reported that the franchise has restructured the QB’s contract, saving them $12 million in cap space for the offseason.

Last season, the Falcons were an enigma to many fans. The team hovered between a solid above-average team to downright being horrendous at times. If they want to turn around their fortunes for next season, massive changes to the roster are required. This is where the money saved from Ryan’s restructuring  will go to.

The question, though, is which part of the roster needs fixing. Cordarelle Patterson’s versatile skillset was a bright spot for the Falcons. Kyle Pitts also emerged as a great pass option in his rookie year. However, the offensive line left much to be desired, as they frequently lost to superior defensive lines and left Ryan wide open. The wide receiving corps could also be an issue, with Calvin Ridley’s suspension gutting their offensive options.

With Ryan nearing the end of his career, protecting him needs to be the Falcons’ top priority in the offseason. This season could be their last chance at making it back to the Super Bowl. Ryan has shown he can still play at a high level, but he’ll need all the help from his offensive line to be successful at making plays happen.
