The Calgary Flames appear to be going all-in this season. On Monday, Calgary traded for top-line winger Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens. In exchange, the Flames sent a top-10 protected first round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, a 2024 fifth round pick, Tyler Pitlick and a prospect named Emil Heinemen.

The Flames, in landing Toffoli ahead of the trade deadline, are getting a proven veteran with championship experience. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 2012. That year, the Kings ended their 45-year drought without a Stanley Cup. Toffoli as a rookie did not have a big role that season though, only scoring two goals in 10 games.

Two years later, the Kings did it again, winning Lord Stanley's Cup for the second time. This time, Toffoli played an integral part of the team's success. Toffoli scored 23 goals and had 49 points. He also posted a +25 in the +/- category, which was among the league leaders that season.

Toffoli played a few more seasons in Los Angeles, then spent time in Vancouver and Montreal before being dealt to Calgary.

Calgary is one of the elite defensive teams in hockey, but lacks scoring depth. Toffoli should help in that regard. The Flames are currently second place in the Pacific Division, a point behind the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
