Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff shares his honest take on the team's chances of winning a Formula 1 title this season.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen has a 12 point lead over Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton with just five races to go. The British star aimed to bag the United States Grand Prix victory but settled for P2 at the end of the race.

With additional pressure, Wolff doesn't seem fazed by Verstappen's near distance from the finish line.

“I think it's really race-by-race and [we need to] keep the spirits up.”

“I think the morale is high. We are right there, we can win every race. It's about avoiding the DNFs – they are the killers.”

Typically, with this kind of deficit late in the game, athletes and teams across all sports tend to show some sort of panic or desperation. Yet, an accomplished Formula 1 boss such as Wolff shows his calm and collected demeanor.

“It's good fun for everybody. There is pressure, but it's positive pressure.”

“I think we've had tough fights with Ferrari in 2018 and '19, and we won seven times in a row, but that is no comfort whilst you are in a championship [battle] that's hard,” he added.

“History has no relevance. Only if you stop one day you can look at the stats that don't interest anybody anyway, so it's hard, but we have fun, we're enjoying it.”

As of now, Mercedes holds a slim 23-point lead over Red Bull in the constructor standings. But, Verstappen is just two race wins away from his first Formula 1 championship—adding significant pressure to Lewis Hamilton.
