The New York Giants have put an emphasis on restoring their passing game behind quarterback Daniel Jones this offseason. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen just how much longer tight end Evan Engram will be a part of it.

Engram's durability has become a major concern as he continues to recover from a foot injury that ended his 2019 NFL season early. It appears there is now plenty of speculation regarding whether or not the Giants will pick up his fifth-year option, via Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post:

Engram remains in a walking boot after his late December foot surgery. He is one of the NFL’s best receiving tight ends when healthy but has missed 14 games due to injury in his three-year career.

The Giants must decide by May whether to pick up Engram’s fifth-year contract option for 2021. He is expected to be sidelined until training camp.

It is no secret that Engram has endured his fair share of injuries since being taken with the 23rd overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, the uncertain future of tight end Rhett Ellison has seemingly left the Giants with some major depth issues at the position heading into the offseason.

When healthy, Engram has established himself as one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the NFL. Although injuries have hindered his development, his skill set makes him an ideal option for Jones as a safety net. However, his track record suggests that his production will continue to be capped by injuries.

As a result, the Giants may need to explore other options in free agency or the 2020 NFL Draft. Their decisions could provide a strong indication of where they stand with Engram's long-term future.
