The 2017 NFL season was an emotional one for New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Not only was the team enduring its worst stretch in years but he was even benched for reasons that never really made sense, to begin with.

Fortunately, Manning has not given up on the Giants and it appears they have not given up on him. According to Eric Barrow of the New York Daily News, co-owner and CEO John Mara says he and the coaching staff are confident in their quarterback:

“We can win with him,” Mara said of Manning. “Objectively, Dave [Gettleman] and Pat [Shurmur] both said he can still play.”

It is encouraging to see that the Giants have placed their faith in Manning. This is something that the previous regime failed to do. It goes without saying that New York was nothing short of a disaster last season. Amidst the notable storylines was former head coach Ben McAdoo's decision to bench the franchise quarterback.

Although Manning had dealt with his fair share of struggles, it was largely expected given the absence of his receiving corps and no run game. Fortunately, the Giants managed to address that issue by taking former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Their decision to draft Barkley alone instead of one of the many top quarterback prospects is proof of their confidence in Manning.

There is good reason for them to believe the veteran can still get the job done. There are not many quarterbacks on the market who have won two Super Bowls against the best team of the last two decades.
