With free agency now in full swing, the New York Giants are ready to retool their roster following a disastrous 2017 NFL season. Now it seems the Giants have wasted no time in potentially addressing a pressing need on the offensive side of the ball.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, New York is reportedly expected to meet with former Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart:

After visiting the Lions today, free-agent RB Jonathan Stewart is expected to visit the Giants tomorrow, source said. His old OC, Mike Shula, is there.

It is no secret that the Giants have lacked a legitimate running game for some time now. As a result, they have geared their attention to adding depth in the backfield this offseason.

Stewart has been busy after already meeting with the Detroit Lions on Monday. Needless to say, both teams have suffered without a potent rushing attack and will be making a strong push to change their fortunes for the 2018 NFL season.

Fortunately, the Giants may have an edge thanks to Stewart's familiarity with the coaching staff. Two of his former offensive coordinators in Carolina — Mike Shula, Jeff Davidson — are now in New York.

The 10-year veteran is the most decorated rusher in Panthers' franchise history. However, he is a far cry from the workhorse back he used to be after registering just 680 yards and six touchdowns in the 2017 campaign.

That said, the Giants could merely be looking to add some depth with running backs Orleans Darkwa and Paul Perkins now unrestricted free agents. This would leave Stewart to split time with second-year running back Wayne Gallman, who is coming off a solid rookie season.
