The New York Giants seem to be willing to take a bold move involving wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

During a recent appearance on WFAN 660, Giants head coach brought up the idea of inserting the talented wideout into the special teams as a punt returner, via Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.

Will the Giants use Odell Beckham Jr. on punt returns?  “There's no reason we can't,” he says.  Shurmur says Giants will be “strategic” with it.

Shurmur’s flirtation with this odd tactic could make plenty of Giants fans feel uncomfortable. Making Beckham do punt return work would increase the risk of injury for the team’s superstar receiver even though there are less expensive players to choose from to do the work. Odell Beckham Jr. became the highest paid wide receiver in NFL history this offseason after signing a titanic five-year, $90 million extension deal with the Giants late last month.

All that being said, Beckham isn’t new to returning punts for the Giants. In his first year in the league, he averaged 8.1 yards on 21 punt returns. In the last three seasons, however, he was only asked to return punts 12 times, as his value on the team increased.

The Giants finished sixth in the league last season with 10.4 yards per punt return.
