Pat Shurmur and the New York Giants have been reserved on what they plan to do with Saquon Barkley during the preseason. In a wise decision, Barkley will not suit up against the Chicago Bears in the Giants' second preseason contest, per Kimberly Jones.

Barkley will watch from the sidelines for the second consecutive week. The Giants' most valuable player was in street clothes against the New York Jets in Week 1 of the preseason. Shurmur realizes just how important the second-year running back is for their offense this year.

In 2018, Barkley led the NFL with 2,028 yards from scrimmage and touched the ball 352 times as a rookie. The electrifying running back also caught 91 passes en route to winning the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award over Baker Mayfield.

Coming into this season, the sensational back might be in for a heftier workload with the lack of weapons in New York's offense. Earlier this offseason, the team traded Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns in a move that shocked Giants fans.

With the departure of OBJ, the Giants were expecting Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate to replace his production. New York signed Tate during free agency to provide some experience at the position. Unfortunately, Shepard suffered a broken thumb and Tate is suspended for the first four games of the season.

Even Corey Coleman was in line to receive a larger role with the scarcity at the position. Sadly, he tore his ACL early in training camp and will miss the entire 2019 season.

Considering the state of the receivers for the Giants, Eli Manning will likely be looking in Barkley's direction on every play that he is on the field. Therefore, it's logical to sit Barkley for games that have little to no meaning.
