The New York Giants appear to be closing in on that much-publicized contract extension with superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, a deal between the two parties is “close, but not done.” That is contrary to a rumor floating around that OBJ is privately claiming that his new contract is all sewn up.

It’s been reported in the past couple of days that Beckham and the Giants have made significant progress and could get a “record-breaking contract” done by the start of the season. If this latest report is true, then it certainly seems as if they are well on their way toward settling this matter well before Week 1.

Given the relatively quick progress of the talks, it seems as if the Giants have stepped up their offer significantly to the point where Beckham is sure to be one of, if not the highest paid wide receiver in the entire league.

Based on his output during his first three full seasons, OBJ is certainly worth that kind of money. He averaged close to 100 catches for over 1,300 and nearly 12 touchdowns during that three-year stretch, which is outstanding production.

Unfortunately, he suffered a broken ankle injury which prematurely ended his season last year. That significant injury likely played a part in the Giants having some reservations about handing Beckham such a massive deal right away.

But with the deal close to getting done it appears as if the Giants have softened their stance and look ready to pay one of the best players in the league what he’s worth.
