As the New York Giants prepare for the 2022 season, the likelihood that players under the previous front-office regime stay with the team is dwindling. Many of the players that Dave Gettleman acquired, namely Daniel Jones, have flopped and could see their last days in blue soon. Darius Slayton could be the latest Gettleman addition to see the door.
According to Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com, Slayton didn't take reps with the first team despite Kadarius Toney, Kenny Golladay and Sterling Shepard all not being available because of injuries. Considering the cap savings they could have and how badly they could use it, Slayton's time with the Giants may be over.
This was a possibility anyway considering the moves the Giants made this offseason, but Slayton rarely worked with the first-team offense during live drills and generally struggled to catch passes. The lack of reps with the starters is especially eye-opening with how many actual starters (Toney, Golladay, Shepard) were out. If the Giants cut or trade Slayton, they’ll save $2.54 million.
Slayton emerged as a key receiver in his rookie season, recording 740 receiving yards, 48 catches and eight touchdowns in 14 games. He led the Giants in receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and yards per target (among those who played double-digit games).
Now, with the Giants drafting Wan'Dale Robinson and Slayton's catch percentage, yards per target and yards per game all going down, it seems like the former fifth-round pick will not be with the Giants long term. Jones could very well join him if he doesn't step up this season.
