Playing for a new team is not the easiest of tasks as it means learning to play with new teammates, coaches, and system. That was what James Johnson experienced last year with the Miami Heat and now in his second season in South Beach, he admitted that he is still continuing to understand his role with them.

The 30-year-old Wake Forest product admitted that it’s a challenge for him, but he is “buying in” to what their offense needs and what head coach Erik Spoelstra is asking from him. He then added, via Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald, that he knows once he has a better understanding of it, things will only get better for him.

“I’m buying in,” Johnson said. “That’s the only way I can describe it. I’m buying in to what our offense needs and to what Coach Spo wants out of me. I think that’s the hardest thing in the NBA, accepting your role and trying to be the best at it.

“It’s a challenge that I want for myself and I think once I figure it out and break through, it’s just going to make it a lot easier for everybody.”

Johnson’s versatility has allowed the Heat to field in different combinations on the floor as he can play and defend multiple positions. His work ethic is also a strong suit of his and fits the culture the franchise has been preaching to all of their players. He is enjoying another solid season with averages of 10.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists.

His comments can be considered good news for the Miami faithful as Johnson is not complaining of having difficulty adjusting to his new role. He is just continuing to work hard to contribute to the Heat and should be a key piece for them moving forward as they try to make it back to the playoffs this season.
