On Thursday, Goran Dragic came to a buyout agreement with the San Antonio Spurs which will see the 6-foot-3 combo guard become a free agent once he clears the waivers. There has already been a lot of teams linked to the former All-Star, which unsurprisingly, also includes one of his former squads in the Miami Heat.

As it turns out, however, the Heat might not be in the mix for Dragic. According to NBA insider Ethan Skolnick of the Five Reasons Sports Network, it appears that it's Miami that has decided to pull out of the race for Dragic because of one major reason:

“My understanding is that this is highly unlikely for the Miami Heat. I was told zero percent by someone in the know today,” said Skolnick. “I never say zero percent, because every time we get into percentages, Greg, we get into trouble, like Tyler Herro’s gonna get traded 75 percent last offseason. That didn’t end up happening.

“But I was told it’s highly unlikely, and it’s not because of Goran’s lack of interest. I was told it’s highly unlikely because the Miami Heat simply don’t want to stunt Gabe Vincent’s development. They feel like they’ve found a guy who has filled that role, and they just don’t want to do it this season.”

Gabe Vincent has been quite a revelation for the Heat this season and there's no denying that the third-year point guard has played a key role in Miami's rotation as Kyle Lowry's primary backup. In 49 games this season, the 25-year-old has put up averages of 9.3 points, 2.1 reb0unds, 3.3 assists, and 1.0 steals, while also connecting on 1.9 triples per contest on a 37.9-percent clip. The addition of Dragic in the roster would complicate Miami's backcourt rotation and apparently, this is not a risk the front office is willing to take.

Sklonick did say that there has been talk about the Heat potentially bringing Dragic back in the offseason with the prospect of the 35-year-old retiring in Miami. However, this is anything but a certainty at this point. Dragic spent seven memorable seasons with the Heat, which includes his only season as an All-Star. He is a well-loved figure in the city and Heat nation would definitely welcome him back with open arms.

At the moment, teams such as the Lakers, Clippers, Bucks, and Warriors, among others, have been linked to Dragic in free agency.
