The Miami Heat were in desperate need of a late surge if they were to get back into the win column on Saturday night versus the Charlotte Hornets. Fortunately, power forward James Johnson managed to give them the boost they needed.

The Hornets had been in control down the stretch after being up by five with 37.2 seconds left in the game. However, Johnson managed to close the gap just a few seconds later with clutch back-to-back buckets.

Needless to say, Johnson managed to pull out an excerpt from the page of NBA Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady. More importantly, his scoring flurry did not go in vain as Miami managed to escape with the 106-105 victory.

Johnson finished with a season-high 22 points on an extremely efficient 9-of-12 shooting. He also recorded seven assists and six rebounds in the winning effort.

Although the former first-round pick has always possessed a somewhat dynamic skill set, he has enjoyed a resurgence with the Heat after spending the first eight seasons of his career as a struggling journeyman. However, he has followed up on a breakthrough year in Miami by averaging 10.2 points, to go with career highs in rebounds (5.0) and assists (4.0) per game.

The Heat suffered a huge loss with the season-ending injury to shooting guard Dion Waiters. Not only was he their best scorer but he was also their most clutch player. That said, it seems Johnson has put in an early bid to take over scoring duties during the final stretch of games.
